When you grow up
Jeonghee, who has been writing a script about a boy called Himchan, goes to the housewarming party of her friend Soyeon and has a heated discussion with Soyeon’s husband.
Film director Jeonghee goes to the housewarming party of Soyeon, her friend since high school. While waiting for another friend to arrive, Jeonghee, Soyeon, and her husband Gangseok end up having a heated discussion about the script that Jeonghee has been writing.
Her protagonist is an eighth-grader named Himchan. He hangs around with older boys from school and even smokes cigarettes. His twin sister Jooyoung is a feminist, who does not hesitate to raise her voice against discrimination both in and out of school. One day, she gets in a fight with the older boys in Himchan’s circle. The time has come for Himchan to make a choice between his sister and friends.
What kind of men will the boys of today grow up to become? When I first came across the news of school MeToo, I was very surprised to learn that things had not changed from when I was at school 15 years before. Yet, students nowadays were different. Instead of keeping silent, they started the school MeToo movement. I wondered what kind of adults the boys of today would grow up to become. That’s how I met Himchan, a boy in the second grade of middle school. I began writing this script half worried and half excited about the future of those teenage boys receiving the same education at school but growing up with courageous young women.
