Get grilled, fried, and thrown
High school girls do Ssireum, Korean wrestling on the sand every day. High school boys struggle to cook in a kitchen. It is an eat-and-live story of them.
Gyeongin Girls' High School in Danyang, North Chungcheong Province has the nation’s first and only girls wrestling club. The members train hard to prepare for a major competition coming up in a month, but an unexpected landslide destroys the wrestling arena. But they are not ready to give up yet! They learn that Hanseong Boys’ High School has an unused wrestling area and decide to train there. In other words, they take an expedition to a place off-limits to women. The girls are used to rolling in the sand and sweating profusely. As the strong girls clash with the boys in every aspect, a sandstorm of commotion sweeps through the once peaceful school. People say that you become family with those with whom you eat. Despite their seemingly irreconcilable differences, the kids gradually come to understand each other. They let their guards down and develop friendships and affection. However, the pressure of the upcoming competition, college entrance exams bring out their selfish sides, and they end up giving each other the cold shoulder. What choices will the kids make? It’s a coming-of-age story about high school seniors who brighten up such tough times and survive through grilled, fried, and thrown stories.
“Let’s make a film about female wrestlers, who are high school students no less!” The project got off to a fresh and exciting start, but I soon ran into difficulties. Why focus on such an unpopular sport? A film about a female high school wrestling club that doesn’t even exist? The project fell into complete disarray, and things got all jumbled up. However, out of that chaos, I found a single direction. I decided to tell the story of independent high school girls taking up an unpopular yet thrilling sport, so I could subvert the stereotypical gender roles in a fun and quirky way, and create a resonating narrative about growth. Beautifully and brilliantly. All stories are bound to resemble their protagonists. This film is set to be strong, fun, and dynamic-just like the high school girl wrestlers.
