A Woman Dancing on the Waves
As the memories of an aging female shaman scatter, her life approaches its final requiem.
As her dementia deepens, Yoon Young-ja, who has spent her entire life as a shaman, moves between a nursing home and her family home. Her words drift between conversations with the dead, memories of her youth, and the confusion of the present. Amid her repeated wandering and anxiety, the family prepares a final ritual to close the long-shuttered shrine. When the doors finally open and the ritual begins, with family and disciples gathered around her, her body rediscovers a rhythm it seemed to have forgotten. Different times collide, and long-buried emotions begin to surface.
This documentary follows my grandmother, a shaman living with dementia, documenting the gradual disappearance of the world she sustained throughout her life. As the language of shamanism and dementia intertwine, the film questions the standards of normality we take for granted and the ways we understand human beings. It reflects emotional traces among family members and across generations, capturing moments when different times and states of mind meet within the ritual of the gut.
