After losing her mother in an accident, 9-year-old Eun-ha learns to dance and grows as she discovers ways to express herself.

SYNOPSIS

After an accident while traveling with her mother, Eun-ha survives alone in a car that falls into a reservoir. With the after-effects of the accident, Eun-ha is left in the care of her aunt, Ja-young, and in the new environment and people, Eun-ha closes herself off. When Eun-ha enrolls in a dance school with her cousin Bo-ra, she begins to confront her feelings, expressing her anxiety and fear through dance. Meanwhile, Ja-young learns that her sister's accident resulted in suicide and keeps it a secret from Eun-ha. Eun-ha begins to gain attention at the dance school, and Bo-ra, jealous, presents Eun-ha's "fish dance" as if it were her own creation. As misunderstandings and conflicts with her own family build up, Eun-ha struggles with what it means to communicate truthfully and learns how to express herself.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

Fish Dance is a story that delves deeply into the complexities of family relationships, the language of pain, and the resilience of the human spirit. It shows how a troubled girl finds a way to become part of a family through dance and connection, and how, despite conflict and obstacles, she finds healing in unexpected places.

INTERVIEW
What inspired you to start this project?
I often saw news stories about children who were victimized by the wrongdoings of adults. I felt anger at the way adults decided the lives of children who had no choice and then compassion for the children who passed away. When these feelings were forgotten, and I was back to my normal life, I worked as a videographer for a dance school, where I felt a strange emotion while filming and editing the children as they created their dances. The choreography they created was phenomenal and felt so alive. What right do we have to take these children's lives away from them? I wondered if it was irresponsible for a child with so many possibilities. I wanted to give the children who were victimized by adults a chance to dance, and I wanted to give them another chance to live again through a movie, which is how I came up with the idea for Fish Dance.
Is there any emotion you want the audience to feel after watching this film?
I hope that seeing Eun-ha's will to live even in difficult situations will make adults feel responsible for the lives of children, and I hope that they will be comforted by the dance choreography that Eunha creates, and that they will think about the people left behind in death and how they will live.
