My Dear
A former journalist’s marriage and childbirth. As one of her young twins is diagnosed with a developmental disability, her life changes completely.
Sang-yeon is a promising 33-year-old city desk reporter who has received a journalist of the year award. She marries her long-time boyfriend, Jinmyoung, and gives birth to boy-girl twins. When her children reach four years old, the younger one, Jiwoo is diagnosed with a developmental disability. Suddenly, Sang-yeon’s life is turned upside down as she becomes the mother of a disabled child. She feels as if she is confined to a “disability island” whose sole residents are her and her kid. When Jiwoo reaches school age, she is told that elementary school will be the only time when disabled and non-disabled children can experience what a single community is. She decides to send him to a regular school equipped with a special class, not a special education school.
Film from an essay『We refuse to be called a village fool』by RYU Seung-yeon.
Her life suddenly changed from a promising journalist to a mother of a disabled child. Based on her experience with the kids, she reveals the naked truth of a family with a disabled child.
The writer says that disability is not others story. we are all a potential person with disability or a family member, friend, neighbor of the potential person with disability. Disability is not the subject of isolation and treatment but something we all need to learn to live with. The mother came out of the disability island and started coming to the world. I hope the film can get to every parent in the same situation to hold their hands.
