Weathering Architect
An architect wins a competition to redesign an apartment, but his plan to keep the old and trees faces stiff opposition.
Joh Sung-yong, an elderly veteran architect, wins a design competition to redevelop an apartment complex with his architectural philosophy of preserving residents' memories, old buildings and trees, but struggles to defend his plans against opposition from developers and a Korean society obsessed with the new and fast.
In 2016, I was making a documentary about urban renewal. Small houses were demolished and huge apartment complex were built. I felt disillusioned. That's when I met the architect Joh Sung-yong. When he was preserving a house where the Hansen patients' residences, he told me, 'When the house disappears, the memory disappears,' and I felt a small comfort. I want to keep his attitude in this film, which is to follow the natural decay and the memories in space in this fast-paced Korean society.
