The Only Child in the Butchery
Orphan Taeseob believed his uncle was his father, but after finding he was just a slave to the man, he plans revenge.
Orphan Taeseob has worked without pay at his uncle's butcher shop, believing him to be his father. Wanting to get married, he demands his share for the first time, but is rejected, realizing he’s been exploited. Enraged, he witnesses his uncle's affair and anonymously blackmails him for money. His plan goes awry when he causes his uncle to fall into a river and disappear. When the uncle returns after being presumed missing, an unexpected body surfaces from the river. As his uncle, the police, and the adulteress's husband become entangled, Taeseob's life spirals into an inescapable quagmire.
Family can be a refuge, but can also become the source of our deepest wounds. In parent-child relationships, the closer they are, the more they demand sacrifice and cause pain. Being raised by "parents" makes it impossible to completely turn away. I wanted to express these conflicting emotions toward family, while also exploring the themes of setting boundaries and achieving emotional and financial independence within that family dynamic.
