Her fifth Room
Will mother and daughter find their own spaces at home?
Hyojeong moved her room three times while living with her in-laws. She shared her first room with her husband as being a full-time housewife, taking care of children and helping her husband. She and her family were just living at the mercy of her overbearing mother-in-law. After her husband's business failed, She became the new head of the family. But the husband only wanted to maintain his authority and she did for all the house chores. After that, Hyojeong moved to the second floor with her own space for the first time. But her husband constantly invaded her space and interrupted her. The freedom of her independence is short-lived, as her husband still wants her to be an obedient wife. Now she is looking for a safe fourth room where she can be alone. Or does she need to find the fifth room outside this house?
For 30 years, Hyojeong, a mother, struggles to find her own space while living at her 'in-law's house' with a strong patriarchal hierarchy. It took her a long time to claim her due rights from her position as a daughter-in-law. And her daughter, 'Chan Young', feel afraid as she watches her mother struggle. She thinks that what her mother does in the marriage system, fulfilling her duty as a mother and wife, will also become her future. Hyojeong and Chan Young share the trauma of domestic violence as they are the 'linked victims'. What Hyojeong goes through to find her space is the process of becoming independeont from the mother role. For these women, the road to winning their independence will be the process of finding themselves.
